Maintenance for Furniture (Part I)

Normal degradation over time - appearance change and decay - especially of fabrics and leathers, as a result of wear and tear, will is expected on all furniture. If a new piece of furniture unexpectedly has a deficiency, you as the buyer should within a reasonable time after you have discovered the defect - or should have discovered it, inform the retailer that you want to complain about the defect.

For the furniture to look good as long as possible, it is important that you take good care of it. Remember that neither furniture leather or upholstery fabrics are self-cleaning and maintenance-free and is affected by both the outer skin, hair, acidic sweat and smearing of jeans. In addition, the spillings also makes messes that must be treated immediately.
Sofas and chairs are the furniture that is most used. Therefore it is important to have knowledge about furniture leather and furniture textiles’ qualities, in order to know how these will best be maintained and cleaned. However, you must calculate the normal wear/degradation over time.
The maintenance guidance below describes recommendations for dusting, cleaning and stain removal for both furniture textile, leather, wood and some other common furniture surfaces. For guidance on care/maintenance of new furniture, contact the store/vendor who sold the furniture or producer.
We will give out guidance in aspects of furniture textiles, furniture leather and wood and surfaces. Please follow our serial blog in instalments for detail guidance on furniture maintenance.

Classic Furniture for Your Modern Home

The Eames Lounge Chair replica is one of the most famous mid-century modern pieces. Its form and functionality have made it one of the most sought after pieces in modern history. This iconic design can be found in popular films, television shows, businesses and in thousands of residences across the globe. Its original designers, Charles and ray Eames, had intended to give it the look and feel of a well worn first Baseball mitt. It led to the creation of the Assonhom's Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman, featuring your choice of multiple leather finishes, high density cushions and imported veneers.

The Panton Chair is the very first ever to be constructed from one continuous piece of material. Since its market launch, the Panton Chair has undergone several production phases. Not until today was it possible to produce it in line with Panton's original idea, namely from consistently dyed, tough plastic with a matt surface and an affordable price. The Panton Chair has won various design awards world-wide and graces the collections of numerous renowned museums. Its expressive shape makes it a true 20th-century design icon. The chair offers great seating comfort thanks to the cantilever base, together with its shape and flexible materials. It can be used on its own or in groups.

Its designer, Verner Panton, had the idea in 1960, on a visit to a factory making safety helmets and buckets, according to the Design Museum. But it would be several years before he could find a manufacturer who was able to mass produce it. Made from a single piece of cantilevered plastic with no back legs, it was the first of its kind.

In his purist approach to design, Finnish-born Eero Saarinen sought out the essential idea and reduced it to the most effective structural solution. "The underside of typical chairs and tables makes a confusing, unrestful world," explained Saarinen. "I wanted to clear up the slum of legs." In his pedestal collection, which includes a dining, coffee and side table, Saarinen realized his ideal of formal unity: "Every significant piece of furniture has a holistic structure." Winner of the 1969 Museum of Modern Art Award

The Tulip Table series is a premium reproduction line inspired by Finnish and American mid-century architecture, a period vastly characterised by the simplification of everyday living. The unique single pedestal base is intentionally made from trustworthy cast aluminum so to support a heavy top without wobbling whilst eliminating the unnecessary clutter of legs underneath.

Wooden Classic Furniture

Hans Wegner (1914 - 2007) is one of a handful of designers who helped to define modern Danish design. In a career spanning more than seven decades, Wegner worked quietly and consistently on a remarkable range of designs that were to transform the domestic aesthetic and become coveted classics.Above all, Wegner was a master craftsman with a keen understanding of the properties and potential of natural materials. Born in 1914 in Tønder, the son of a shoemaker, he was apprenticed to a carpenter at the age of 17 before studying at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. He studied there from 1936-1938, before taking further studies as an architect.

The Wishbone Chair was designed by none other than Danish designer Hans J. Wegner. Wegner’s most classic chair is a rare combination of natural design and practicality, with fluid lines and minimalist style. The graceful Y-back, smooth frame and intricate woven seat represent the prominent features of the Organic Functionalism movement of the time. While most replicas take shortcuts on the features that make the original what it is, the Assonhom replica furniture is faithfully recreated in honor of Wegner and his principles for great design.

Noguchi table consists of three pieces. A freeform, 3/4" plate-glass top resting on two curved, solid wood legs that interlock to form a tripod for self-stabilizing support. The solid wood base of the table has a lacquered finish and available in Noguchi black, walnut and natural color.

"To limit yourself to a particular style may make you an expert of that particular viewpoint or school, but I do not wish to belong to any school," he said. "I am always learning, always discovering."

Cherner Side Chair

The 1958 moulded plywood side chair by Norman Cherner is an icon of mid-century furniture design, showcased in exhibitions worldwide. American architect and designer Norman Cherner studied and taught at the Columbia University Fine Arts Department and was an instructor at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City from 1947 to 1949. During this time, he also explored the Bauhaus movement, embarking on a lifetime exploration of multidisciplinary design: from furniture, glassware, lighting and accessories to his pioneering work in low-cost prefabricated housing. Best-known for the moulded plywood seating he created for Plycraft, Cherner was an innovative and unassuming hero of modern design.

The understated Cherner Side Chair is cleverly crafted for timeless appeal and seamless adaptability. The molded plywood piece has been featured in museums and galleries, as well as artist Normal Rockwell's masterpiece, "The Artist at Work." Taking on a bowtie shape, the chair maximizes comfort despite the pared-down silhouette. The concave backrest is widest at the shoulders and the seat is curved, allowing the body to relax easily. This item’s organic, streamlined shape allows it to be suitable for home or office environments.

The Cherner Chair is still regarded as one of the most dramatic designs utilizing the technology of molding plywood. Like the 1958 original, the Cherner armchair utilizes a molded plywood beech core seat with a unique construction of laminated plywood in graduated thickness with face veneers in beech or walnut.

Designed in 1950, it is also commonly known as the Wishbone Chair (owing to its wishbone-shaped backrest), or more industrially as the CH24 Chair. An agile and strong piece, the rounded back rails of the Wishbone Chair allow the human form to change and shift position. The cord seat is deliberately sunk towards the lower back, in order to allow the person to sit completely upright. Furthermore, the seat of the Wishbone Chair is deliberately lowered, allowing for both short and tall frames. Available in five wood finishes - maple, beech, ash, oak and walnut - the seat also comes in natural, black or white cord. A particular modern finish is created with the painted versions, of which thirteen colours are available. A truly timeless and adaptable piece, suitable for any home or office space.
